I visited this farm property the other day, and I wondered how many autumns this old barn has seen. When I see scenes like this one, I try to imagine how many generations have toiled alongside these limestone bricks; I think about the dreams that were born on these lands; and I am reminded that, whatever happens, the world keeps spinning and time waits for no one.

Autumn in Minnesota is a time of preparation for the upcoming winter. It's harvest time, the time when my forbears made sure they had enough canned foods and firewood to make it through the long, cold months ahead. It's a time of hard work and foresight and reflection. And it's all part of the great cycle of life. In three months, these photos will be buried under a frozen blanket. In six months, new buds will force themselves up through the earth. And so it goes. There is beauty all around us. Sometimes we just have to stop and look.
